Respecting the Bradys, Correction, the Obamas

Brady Obama MashMichelle Obama took the stage at last night’s opening of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) with one task at hand. Prove that you love America. Beyond achieving that unfair task she also presented a portrait of her family which could only be respected for its resonating American themes: from the tragic passing of a working class father, to the classic anxious drive home from the hospital with a first child.

The message was loud and it was clear as crystal; this lingering “question” of love of country and patriotism is now to be completely off the table. Will those media outlets obsessed with “scary Michelle” or Camp McCain (in love with the “these-people-are-foreigners” story-line) actually take heed to this? (One can almost hear the office pools starting around the country. I’d put my money on “hell no.”)

After Michelle’s speech newly minted MSNBC host Rachel Maddow shared a salient memory which best informed the moment. She talked of the Clinton family’s introduction to America. Maddow reluctantly admitted that that moment had inspired a feeling
